Five Reasons To Love Fort Wayne

I moved to Fort Wayne as a kid in the 90's. I lived here until '09. Then I moved to Dayton, Ohio and lived there for seven years. I recently moved back to Fort Wayne to start a new church with Pine Hills Church. I wrote an update on that in my last blog. You can read about it here. A lot has changed in the city over the last seven years, so we've been doing a lot of exploring as a family and discovering some new things along the way. Here are five reasons I've found to love Fort Wayne.

1. Food Trucks.

When I left Fort Wayne in '09 there were no food trucks, or at least none that I was aware of. Now they are everywhere. And they are crazy good. There's a food truck rally at Redeemer Lutheran on Wednesday nights, at Ted's Market on Thursday nights, and a couple of mini-rallies at various locations throughout the week. There's an event called FoodStock coming up on October 8th at Headwaters Park that will feature lots of food trucks. You can learn more about it here.

2. The Zoo.

The zoo was around when I was a kid. But I never realized how awesome it is that Fort Wayne has their own zoo until I moved away. For a mid-major city, it's pretty impressive to have such a high quality children's zoo right here in town. My wife and I got the family zoo pass as our anniversary gift to each other this year. It's really affordable and a lot of fun. If you have kids, you have to check it out. Even if you don't, it's still worth a visit. Here's a link to their website.

3. The Trails.

I remember the River Greenway from my childhood, but it seems like the trail system has exploded in recent years. There are so many fantastic trails all over the city. As a runner, it's been a lot of fun to hop on a bunch of different trails, and it's been a great way to explore the city too. There are plans in place to connect many of these trails to each other in the future. If you haven't explored the trails yet, here's a link to learn more about them.

4. The Chocolate.

If you've lived in Fort Wayne your entire life then you might take for granted the fact that you have a world-class chocolaterie right here in your own city. I have never had better chocolate than DeBrand's anywhere. It's unreal. I feel like taking a break from writing this blog to go buy some right now. And since I live in Fort Wayne, I can actually do that. Here's the good news for you out-of-towners: you can order their chocolate online too! Here's a link to their website where you can drool over their delicious delicacies.

5. Downtown.

I'm not sure where to begin here. So much has changed over the last several years in downtown Fort Wayne. There's a new baseball stadium. There are a ton of new businesses and restaurants. There are bike lanes. (For some reason that makes it feel like a real downtown.) There are new condos and apartment complexes with even more on the way. There are lots of events and festivals going on all the time downtown. It is a happening place to be right now. That definitely was not the case when I was a kid. It's exciting to see so much positive change in the heart of the city. Here's a link where you can learn more about downtown Fort Wayne.

There are so many other great things about Fort Wayne that I didn't even mention in this blog. If you are looking for a good place to learn more about the city, you should check out this website. Or you can simply get out and explore the city for yourself. Who knows what you might find! Fort Wayne definitely has a lot to offer, and we are thrilled to be back to enjoy both the familiar and the new features of the city.
